Thank you. I live in a tiny home on wheels, off-grid but not as isolated. I too have multiple chronic illnesses which have disabled me from my work as a pediatrician. I choose tiny off-grid living for a bit of rebellion, financial benefits, and a tighter connection with nature. I use solar panels, some not weatherproof, so I’m more aware of the weather for survival. I too struggle with managing my home & movement because of the illness but also so benefit from being deeper connected to nature with my home & more importantly my body.

So sad to hear and to speak! Rwanda is improving in everything; and hope this will not happen again.

Blessed to be “a fly on the wall” at that event in a sacred area of my own NorCal home.

Comment on The Doe’s Song by Hedy Havel https://orionmagazine.org/article/the-does-song/#comment-781081 Thu, 19 Oct 2023 21:33:33 +0000 https://orionmagazine.org/?post_type=article&p=44781#comment-781081 a lovely sad essay. I can relate even though I only was in a car that hit a deer once.
but. I live on an old farm. I’ve lived here for 42 years. I noticed in the first week of life on the farm that does would visit. especially when I put out water tanks. then I had a dream. St. Nicholas was standing by the sheep barn with his arm around a does’ shoulders. “protect them and the farm will be safe.” I woke up and banned hunting on the farm. now I’m rewinding it. in all the time I’ve lived here, the does come to have their fawns. the fawns don’t always make it through the first month but enough do so that there are always a half dozen deer in the pasture or the wood lots. but I am surrounded by hunters. and they know that there are deer on my farm. one guy built a comfortable deer stand at the SW corner of my farm. I found that the fence was cut. I repaired it and posted a no trespassing sign next to it. then, I bought a livestock guardian dog. they helped keep hunters out of the woods. but hunters are persistent. some would drive his pick-up and park along my fences. when I discovered this, I would stand by the fence until the hunter left. I figured no deer would want to cross that fence when I was standing there. I love the deer. I see them everyday. and yes, I do get ticks but I check myself when I go where the deer bed down. I do what I can to protect them. we all must do what we can…

Comment on Women and Standing Rock by Carolyn Thompson https://orionmagazine.org/article/women-standing-rock/#comment-780818 Mon, 16 Oct 2023 16:02:49 +0000 https://orionmagazine.org/?post_type=article&p=48276#comment-780818 The issue of Water is beyond all races, cultures and belief. IT IS A BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR LIFE ON EARTH. WITHOUT IT NOTHING EXISTS.
I would love to see and participate in a world wide effort to return the waters of our world to its purity for all people, all animals, all lifeforms in a way that no “company of small interests” can out weight the law of purity.
Companies can take their money they make and return water to it’s purity or loose their access. It is not a “right” to use water for capital gains. It is a temporary access with major limitations. This is the only way.
The Laws of Purity is to sustain all life on our planet.
This is no longer a small local issue as media, companies and other “non-life affirmmers” pretend it is.
Lets take this to a level it needs to be addressed. Small gets buried in slander. This is Life and the need for Water to take its rightful place within our burgeoning world, we must define these issues in a concise scientific, and life-affirming manner for the world.
Thank you all who worked so hard at Standing Rock and all the many world wide battles to keep water safe for our offspring.
